matthew 12:32 explained
1 min readDoes this scribe offer to follow Jesus? (2.) The Sabbath was for rest. In immediate juxtaposition to this stands the Gentile centurion, who seeks healing for his servant. asked the city man. He will not break the crushed reed, and he will not quench the smoking wick, till he sends forth his conquering judgment, and in his name shall the Gentiles hope.". Neither did He need to wait for His exaltation as man; for He was ever God, and God's Son, who therefore, if one may so say, waits for nothing, for no day of glory. In short, the sense is, that the sin against the Holy Ghost never has forgiveness; it is not pardoned now, and consequently there will be no declaration of the pardon of it hereafter. Which parts are genuine, which parts are spurious. We may add one more illustration of Jewish exorcism. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:22-45; Mark 3:22-30; Luke 11:14-36). The original point of the quotation was this. He is greater than Jonah, and no preacher ever produced repentance so amazingly as Jonah did ( Matthew 12:41). the Sadducees) brake in, and said there was NO AGE but one, then it was appointed to be said for ever and ever. Thus, in the scene of the leper, we have Jesus presented as "Jehovah that healeth Israel," as man here below, and in Jewish relationships, still maintaining the law. ( Matthew 12:22-23 ). Note, Those who bind up their happiness in the praise and applause of men, expose themselves to a perpetual uneasiness upon every favourable word that they hear said of any other. Christ had wrought divers miracles of this kind before; but his works are not the less wonderful, nor the less to be wondered at, for their being often repeated. Even the suggestion of work was forbidden; even anything which might symbolically be regarded as work was prohibited. IV. (ii) On this occasion Jesus is not defending himself for anything that he did on the Sabbath; he is defending his disciples; and the authority which he is stressing here is not so much his own authority as the authority of human need. The faithful and true witness, it was His to display that power in goodness which shall be put forth fully in the world to come, the great day when the Lord will manifest Himself to every eye as Son of David, and Son of man too. What's your burden? "Yes, certainly it is, it can be no other; such miracles as these plainly evince that the kingdom of the Messiah is now setting up." My object, of course, is to point out as clearly as possible the structure of the gospel, and to explain according to my measure why there are these strong differences between the gospels of Matthew and the rest, as compared with one another. Note this, which Christ contradicts, concerning blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. Numbers 28:9). And so it was necessary for them to constitute what was bearing a burden. And at that time Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the corn, [that is the corn of wheat, they called the little ripened wheat, the corn], and the disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat them. Here was no glorious prince with pomp and circumstance; here was no rattle of swords nor army with banners; here was no fiery cross calling men to war; here was a simple carpenter from Galilee, in whose words was wisdom gentle and serene, in whose eyes was compassion, and in whose hands was mysterious power. ", 52. Any one of these actions would have been illegal for any ordinary person to perform on the Sabbath day. (i) He will tell the nations what justice is. And so with Jesus, His brothers, and all, not believing in Him at that point, said, "who is my brother? If the prince of devils was actually lending his power to the destruction of his own demonic agents, then there was civil war in the kingdom of evil, and that kingdom was doomed. But as David observed the gods that they made, and he said, "eyes they have, but they cannot see. In other words, the leper is here introduced after the sermon on the mount, though, in fact, the circumstance took place long before it. How little they had learnt the divine lesson of grace, not ordinances! But when the Lord was here, no matter what the unbelief of others, it was only an opportunity for the grace of Jesus to shine out. Nevertheless, when there was the display of the glory of the kingdom, the Father's voice proclaimed Him as His own Son, and not merely as the man thus exalted. He put on sackcloth and ashes. But you could take preventive measures to keep him from dying, but that's all, nothing towards healing. Christ speaks here concerning idle words, and shows what evil there is in them (Matthew 12:36; Matthew 12:37); much more is there in such wicked words as the Pharisees spoke. We are continually revealing what we are by what we say. Therefore, in Matthew 12:8, it may well be that son of man should be written without capital letters, and that the phrase does not refer to Jesus but simply to man. Many of the early Quakers had this bitter experience. Because man becomes like his God. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and take up their residence there. Blasphemy - Injurious or evil speaking of God. In this sense the apostle seems to speak, Hebrews 2:5; Hebrews 6:5. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat them. If a man is starving, if a man is hungry, then there are those higher laws that deal with the preservation of life. In Matthew 13:1-58 we have the well-known sketch of these new ways of God. Matthew 12:32 Commentaries: "Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. There is nothing so revealing as words. The key to it is this, that Matthew was led by the Holy Ghost to keep in view adequate testimony to the Jewish people; it was the tender goodness of God that would meet them in a manner that was suitable under the law. . Verse-. He seems to turn from the Pharisees to the people, from disputing to instructing; and from the sin of the Pharisees he warns the people concerning three sorts of tongue-sins; for others' harms are admonitions to us. In the little differences that may arise between the disciples of Christ among themselves, we are taught to lessen the matters in variance, and to seek peace, by accounting those who are not against us, to be with us (Luke 9:50); but in the great quarrel between Christ and the devil, no peace is to be sought, nor any such favourable construction to be made of any indifference in the matter; he that is not hearty for Christ, will be reckoned with as really against him: he that is cold in the cause, is looked upon as an enemy. See the notes at Matthew 9:3. For all these reasons true kinship is not always a matter of a flesh and blood relationship. Here in this chapter we see the first definite steps, the end of which could be nothing other than the Cross. When He reaches the house, minstrels were there, and people, making a noise: the expression, if of woe, certainly of impotent despair. "My daughter is even now dead, but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live." It is true physically; if a man ceases to use certain muscles, they will atrophy. The Lord Jesus, even before He pronounced the sentence, for so it was, indicated what was at hand in these two instances of the Sabbath-day, though one may not now linger on them. Verse 32. (2.) The destruction of the devil's power is wrought by the Spirit of God; that Spirit who works to the obedience of faith, overthrows the interest of that spirit who works in the children of unbelief and disobedience. And now they have the audacity to say to Jesus, "why don't you show us a sign, proof that you're the Messiah.". He has His rejection before His eyes, as well as the presumptuous unbelief of this sordid, and self-confident, would-be follower. Throughout it is the religious kind that are tested and found wanting. The works of the devil, as a rebel against God, and a tyrant over the souls of men, were destroyed by Christ; and therefore it was the most absurd thing imaginable, to think that Beelzebub should at all countenance such a design, or come into it: if he should fall in with Christ, how should then his kingdom stand? The apostles were then sent thus, no doubt, forerunners of those whom the Lord will raise up for the latter day. Therefore, they had no way of receiving his forgiveness (Matthew 12:30-32). A man may say in his relaxed moment a coarse and questionable thing that he would never have said in public--and that very thing may lodge in someone's memory and stay there unforgotten. . Or, It shall be forgiven neither now, in the sinner's own conscience, nor in the great day, when the pardon shall be published. The crowds were beside themselves with amazement. ( Matthew 12:12 ). So the Pharisees went away and conferred against him, to find a way to destroy him. You don't show the traits.I would have you to show, and yet, you're coming and sacrificing. (i) He gave him back his health. The ignorance is wholly on our side: all they say or omit was owing to the far-reaching and gracious wisdom of Him who inspired them. This they wanted, they were evil; and how can ye, being evil, speak good things? Wretched we, that we should need such proof of it; wretched, that we should be so slow of heart to answer to it, or even to feel its immensity! Matt 12:32, Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. The Greek word is constantly so used as an expression of contempt, "This [fellow] doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils." No doubt the tempest was great; but what harm could it do to Jesus? (1.) We put prayer and sacraments first. Thus, in the chapter before us, we have a very comprehensive sketch of the Lord's manifestation from that time, and in type going on to the end of the age. And surely our body needs a day of complete rest. He that transgresses a negative precept, and repents, his repentance suspends judgment, and the day of expiation expiates him; as it is said, This day shall all your uncleannesses be expiated to you. Note, It is the way of malicious people, especially the malicious persecutors of Christ and Christianity, to condemn the same thing in those they hate, which they approve of and applaud in those they have a kindness for: the judgments of envy are made, not by things, but persons; not by reason, but prejudice. The Father and the Son have their appropriate part, even as we know from elsewhere the Spirit sent down from heaven in due time was to have His. Outwardly it was a condition of comparative cleanness. Nor did He say, you really shouldn't bother me, or talk to me about these things, talk to my mother and she filters them out, she'll tell me what I need to know.I would hate to be depending upon Mary, when Jesus took this attitude towards her while He was here on earth. That is prophetically, where God promised unto David that of his seed should the Messiah come. "Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom? Whittier had it rightly: "O brother man, fold to thy heart thy brother! [3.] The good man brings out good things from his good treasure house; and the evil man brings out evil things out of his evil treasure house. And he said unto them, [rather then answering directly] if one of you have, one of your sheep, and if it would fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, wouldn't you lift it out? If something doesn't move into that vacuum, if something doesn't come in its place, the spirit will return finding the house all swept, clean. Am I truly on the Lord's side, or, am I trying to shuffle through life in a state of cowardly neutrality? If we compare the eighth chapter, for example, with the corresponding circumstances, as far as they appear, in the gospel of Mark, we shall find the latter gives us notes of time, which leave no doubt on my mind that Mark adheres to the scale of time: the design of the Holy Ghost required it, instead of dispensing with it in his case. Our aim is not the mere negative absence of evil action; it is the positive presence of work for Christ. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard . The gravity of the blasphemy against the Spirit, however, depends upon the Holy Spirit as the fundamental dynamic that stands behind and makes possible the entire messianic ministry of Jesus itself . The point now is that if Jesus' casting out demons cannot be explained by the power of Satan, then it all reflects an authority that is greater than Satan's. By this point, then, the analogy can be understood. Now, (1.) He put a ring that had a root which was one of those sorts mentioned by Solomon in the nostrils of the demoniac, after which he drew out the demon through his nostrils; and when the man fell down immediately, he adjured the demon to return into him no more, making still mention of Solomon, and reciting the incantations which he composed. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money. He proves that he can dispense with the observation of the feast, because he is master of the feast. That there is only one way you can have forgiveness of your sin, and that is by the receiving of the Son of God, Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. Now if you continually refuse that work of the Holy Spirit in your heart revealing Jesus Christ to you, reproving you of your sin, because you do not believe in Him; if you continue in that mode, there is no forgiveness, because God has provided no other way for men to be saved. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things, which were written in the books according to their works. And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?" Nothing but the salt of grace, cast into the spring, will heal the waters, season the speech, and purify the corrupt communications. . But when Jesus knew it, [rather than a confrontation at this time] he withdrew himself ( Matthew 12:15 ). And when the devil was come out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel." 32.Neither in the present life What these words mean, Mark briefly explains by saying, thatthose who have spoken against the Spirit are exposed to eternal judgment Every day we ask from God the forgiveness of sins, and every day he reconciles us to Him; and, finally, at death, he takes away all our sins, and declares that he is gracious to us. Matthew 12 Bible Commentary - Matthew Henry (concise) - Christianity Christian service is not the service of any liturgy or ritual; it is the service of human need. No doubt it is a tie of nature for this life only. Next, He lays bare the capricious unbelief of man, only consistent in thwarting every thing and one that God employs for his good; then, His own entire rejection where He had most laboured. Next the channels of water were made to flow backwards. It was to that stage the Scribes and Pharisees had come. I pray you, Jesus, to give me back my health, so that I shall not need to beg for food in shame.". Florence Allshorn, the great principal of a women's missionary college, tells of the problem of the candidate who always discovers that her time for quiet prayer has come just when there are greasy dishes to be washed in not very warm water. 12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. "It will be forgiven" can be heard as referring to a higher authority, the authority he represents. He is not going to lower Himself to a human measure. He composed such incantations also, by which distempers are alleviated. Now, it was an established principle, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word should be established. 27.) 2. First of these comes the treasure hidden in the field, for which the man sells all he had, securing the field for the sake of the treasure. Because there are aspects of that revelation that differ with their own ideas and concepts of how they would judge, or how they would govern the universe. Some pretend to good expenses that have not a good treasure--such will soon be bankrupts: some pretend to have a good treasure within, but give no proof of it: they hope they have it in them, and thank God, whatever their words and actions are, they have good hearts; but faith without works is dead: and some have a good treasure of wisdom and knowledge, but they are not communicative, they do not bring forth out of it: they have a talent, but know not how to trade with it.
